Last week, I helped a friend put together denim outfits using the three-piece formula: current jeans, a great top, and a transitional jacket. It’s such an easy way to achieve chic, effortless outfits! Look below for some denim, top, and jacket options.
1. Wear Current Denim
Many people reach for denim when getting dressed. Dark denim is always a fall staple, and it’s a great option for work or when you want a dressier look. Medium or lighter-wash denim has a more casual vibe but can also feel polished when styled with a cute top and jacket.

Wide Leg and Boot-Cut Jeans
Right now, wide-leg denim is trending, and I love the petite version of the J.Crew denim shown below. I like the fit; it’s a best-seller and the correct length without any alterations—what a win! Classic and tall sizes are available, too. I also like the Frame Le Slim Palazzo, but I suggest sizing it down if you want a trimmer fit. I wear a heel or this boot in both of these styles. You can wear a heel or a flat or sneaker with a shorter style wide leg like the Paige Anessa. Straight, bootcut, and barrel jeans are trending denim options too. I like the Fidelity boot cut, and I just tried a dark wash Frame Le Crop Bootcut. I love the fit. Plus, you can wear any shoe style with these bootcut jeans.
Straight Jeans
Classic straight jeans are always in style. I like this style here, here, and a classic Levi 501 here. You might like these black straight-leg jeans, too.
A StylishSandy follower asked: I love straight-leg jeans/pants but am unsure what low-heeled shoes to wear when it gets colder. Boots? Loafers? Can you give suggestions? Yes, here are some shoe options. This Dolce Vita boot has a low heel and is water-resistant. Plus, I love the look of this boot by Staud, and this style by Madewell is cute and comfortable, too. I sized up in the Madewell boot. Loafers are a perfect shoe style to wear with straight jeans. Madewell has a comfortable loafer that runs true to size here, and this Espresso-colored loafer by Veronica Beard is so pretty. The Rag & Bone Carter is so comfortable. Make sure you size down. A slingback like this or a Mary Jane are other shoe styles for straight jeans.

2. Choose a Versatile Top
Ranch Jacket | Button up | Jeans | Boots | Bag
The next step in the three-piece formula is selecting easy, versatile tops like lightweight sweaters, t-shirts, and button-ups to pair with your jeans. These staples are stylish on their own and ideal for layering under a jacket or cardigan, making them perfect for creating effortlessly chic outfits.
3. Add a Jacket or Cardigan

Lastly, a short jacket, cardigan, or blazer is the perfect finishing touch to pull your outfit together. Whether you’re going for a casual or polished look, these layering pieces instantly elevate your outfit and add that finishing touch to complete your look.
