Wardrobe Essentials: 10 Classic Items You Can Count On!

We all need timeless pieces that we can rely on; I know they are the backbone of my closet, and I mix them with other trendier pieces in my wardrobe. My friend Bobby Schuessler, the Marketing Director at Who What Wear, recently asked me for a list of my favorite timeless pieces that I count on. I was happy to share a list of 10 classic items, which you can read about below. Take a look. Do you wear these items too?

1. LBD

Everyone needs a timeless little black dress (LBD) in their wardrobe they can reach for at any time. That’s why I suggest getting an easy-to-style slip dress. The Vince satin midi (or here) is one of my favorites. It’s so versatile you can dress it up with a blazer and strappy heels or dress down with a denim jacket and comfy sandals. This is a great travel dress too. You can wear it several times and it takes little room in your suitcase.

Additional Slip Dresses

If you prefer wearing separates, Vince has you covered with camisole and skirt options. Making it easy to mix and match with other pieces. This tank and skirt from J.Crew are good ones too.

2. Blazer

A blazer is one of my favorite categories in my closet, and I wear them year-round! So how about you, do you like wearing blazers? It adds a finishing touch to an outfit and overall style to your wardrobe. I recommend starting with a classic black blazer and adding a white one or like this,  this, or seasonal color for a fun playful option for summer.

3. White T-Shirt

I live in T-shirts this time of year! A classic piece everyone should have in their wardrobe is a white T-shirt. My go-to is the white ATM schoolboy crew neck. It’s a splurge item, but it’s much more than just a T-shirt. The fabric is forgiving, skims over your middle, the arm length is perfect, and the material looks cool and luxurious—my favorite layering piece worn with jeans, under blazers, and other jackets. But, since I wear T-shirts often, I always have a few others I like to rotate in like this one the Madewell Whisper, a slouchy style for lounging like this one from Skims and this style by Hanes. Let me know if you have a favorite T-shirt!

4. Straight Leg Jeans

So many denim styles are trending this season, but classic and timeless straight-leg jeans are a style you can count on. For summer, try a lighter wash like these.

5. Button-Down Shirt

The button-down shirt is classic and never goes out of style. I like the various types available, such as the camp style, traditional button-down, and relaxed styles. When it comes to styling, the options are endless. For example, try layering an oversized shirt over a tank and pairing it with jeans for a relaxed and effortless outfit. On the other hand, if you want a more polished look, tuck a classic button-down into a pair of tailored trousers.

6. Nude Sandals

When in doubt, wear classic nude or neutral-colored sandals. They elongate the leg and go with many outfits, making them a wardrobe staple you can always count on.

7. Trousers

Whether aiming for a chic casual look or wanting to elevate your style at work, trousers are versatile go-to pants that add style and grace. This trouser from Nordstrom is comfortable and perfect to wear with a favorite sneaker. Try wearing a tucked tank and an open blouse with a looser-fitting touser.

8. Denim Jacket

Another classic item I wear on repeat and recommend for every wardrobe is the jean jacket. Whether you wear it over a dress, pair it with jeans, trousers, or an athleisure outfit, the jean jacket is a third piece that will never let you down! I’m wearing a vintage Calvin Klein Jean Jacket in the photo. The shorter style is perfect to wear with a longer dress.

9. Sneakers

Are you a fan of sneakers? I am and tend to have quite a few pairs in my rotation. Haha. I think everyone should have sneakers in their closet. Don’t forget to try classic white and retro styles.

10. Tote and Cross Body Bags

Oh, handbags. I would not want to choose just one! However, tote bags and crossbody bags are the timeless styles that most of us rely on when it comes to everyday bags. Crossbody bags always offer the convenience of being hands-free while on the move, while a tote holds our essentials. I’m always searching for new styles, so here are some favorites I’ve found.

  1. Hi, the Paige Claudine jeans look like they have a cut/frayed leg in your picture when wearing them. The link shows a hemmed edge. Are they the same pair?
    Thanks
    Ann

    • Hi Ann,
Thank you for pointing that out, I linked the wrong pair! Ijust corrected it and linked the frayed edge Paige Claudine. It’s the same jean that it’s in the photo. Let me know if you trry them!
