I love this time of year. Football season kicks off, there is the excitement of Fashion Week, and kids head back to school. Plus, it’s that time of year when I want a wardrobe refresh to get the must-have pieces for the fall season.
Nordstrom is my go-to destination when I do my fall shopping. Whether it’s hunting for the perfect pair of jeans, a cozy cashmere sweater, or even a designer handbag, Nordstrom always delivers. I shop all departments, looking for pieces that blend high and low styles and prices, that will fit into a wardrobe. I also love to read about fashion and always enjoy the ‘Thread’ section on the Explore tab for interesting fashion interviews and style inspiration. I recently did some shopping at Nordstrom ( using my Nordstrom notes) and compiled a list of 10 must-have items that will seamlessly update your wardrobe for fall. Take a look!
1. Denim
Denim is always the first item on my must-have list! As a former Nordstrom stylist, I’d usually start with a great pair of jeans when styling a customer. I recommend classic straight jeans like the Levi pictured or this one here or here. Add a blazer, cardigan, and loafers, and you have a chic, French-inspired look. Flares, bootcut, and wide-leg jeans are also trending; since we wear them frequently, it’s nice to have a variety of styles in our fall wardrobe.

Sneakers have become a staple in our closets and are a must-have item for fall. Plus, during my recent trip to NYC, I couldn’t help but notice that sneakers were the footwear of choice on the streets. In an upcoming blog post, I’ll dive deeper into this, but here’s a sneak peek: wear a classic sneaker that will go with all your outfits. A couple of other options arehere, here, and here.

10. Dress
Everyone needs a reliable black dress in their closet for various occasions. The ALC Renzo, for instance, has never failed to turn heads at the events I’ve worn it to. Another personal favorite is the Vince mock turtleneck dress. It’s versatile and perfect to wear casually with boots and a sweater or dress it up with heels, a jacket, and some accessories. Plus, have a cocktail bag like this or this and heels or this one too to be ready when you need them. Having these versatile black dresses in your wardrobe means you’ll never have to worry about what to wear.

Thank you, Nordstrom, for sponsoring this post.
Love your style. I’m 65 5’2 125lbs. I dress very similar to you. I have a Veronica Beard miller blazer in black. The sleeves go to my knuckles. My seamstress says because of the buttons the sleeves cant be hemmed. Should I leave them that length? I was rolling the cuff up just a little as you use to do. Would love your opinion. Keep doing what you are doing. Love following you.
Laurene
Laurene, Thank you for your question and nice note. We are pretty close in age, and I’m 5’2 as well! It sounds like the sleeves on your Veronica Beard Miller jacket are too long. I recommend asking your tailor or Nordstrom alterations to shorten the sleeve from the shoulder. That way, you will be able to keep the pretty button detail. A tailor might be unable to shorten the sleeve from the shoulder if the arm sleeve is too tight around your bicep. If there’s plenty of room, it shouldn’t be a problem. Let me know if that works!
