3 different Utility Jackets for Fall 2020

The end of summer is near and cooler weather is starting to creep in. I don’t know about you but as the mornings get colder, I like to reach for a lightweight utility jacket to ward off the chill.

The military or utility jacket has been a staple in our wardrobes for years, and it will continue to be a staple in 2020. The green jacket is the most common of the category, but other favorites are camo, leopard, and a variety of colors too. For size reference, I am 5’2″ and wear a size 0/2 or XS.

Comparing  3 Jackets

The jacket pictured below from Madewell is medium weight and is available in sizes 00-3x. Out of the three jackets I tried, this was the best fit for me. There is room in the shoulders, but it’s not too boxy or oversized.  I am wearing an xs and still have room to layer a hoodie or heavy sweater and will be able to wear this jacket throughout the fall season. I plan on wearing it to run errands, and for coffee and dinner with friends.

Camo Option

Many of my customers who work from home are adopting a more casual wardrobe, so I chose this outfit to highlight a relaxed, laid back, yet cool look. The Isabel Marant Etoile blouse is made of cotton and is a comfortable 3 season top. You can’t go wrong with this Levi denim.  Straight cut denim is trending this fall, and at $98 ( as of writing, its price marched at $68), this comfortable denim is a must-have. The splurge handbag is the YSL crossbody. This camera bag is the perfect size to hold a small wallet, glasses, lipstick, mask, and a bit more. The crossbody strap is the perfect length too. The neutral color will go with everything in your wardrobe, and you will wear it for years. Lastly, the Golden Goose sneaker is a statement shoe that has a casual luxury feel.  Comfortable, relaxed vibe, you will wear them with dresses, skirts, and denim.  They are a bit of a splurge, but if you wear them often, as I do, the price per wear is minimal.

The second jacket I tried is by Good American. This fun print takes the utility jacket to an entirely different level. This jacket is made of cotton twill, has a snap front closure, and is a great fit for many of my customers.  It’s available in extended sizes too. One added feature I love is the adjustable snaps on the back to add structure to the waist. I’d layer this jacket over a black dress or skirt, with a high heel combat boot or black denim and a grey sweater.

The 3rd jacket I tried is by Caslon.  This lightweight, cotton jacket has added stretch for comfort, and the sweatshirt hood gives an extra cool-girl vibe and can be removed to offer a classic look too. This jacket is a great fit for many, and I liked the way it cinches in the waist, and it is a perfect length.   I would style this jacket with grey joggers, a fun graphic t-shirt, and cool sneakers.

Style Inspo

This Madewell is styled with Scotch & Soda dress and Christian Louboutin boot. I love this wrap dress, especially with a high heel Chelsea boot.

  1. I love the jacket in the last picture in your post. But can’t seem to find it on the Nordstrom site. It doesn’t appear to be one of the 3 you mentioned above. Can you tell me where this one is from?
    Thank you. Linda
