As a stylist, I get frequent requests from clients for casual, effortless outfits that are easy to put together and chic – the type of outfits to wear to dinner, a small party, or a gathering. If you have the right basics in your wardrobe, you can create outfits for any occasion with ease. Below I’m sharing three wardrobe basics you need in your closet to create casual and dressy looks.
When in doubt, wear denim. Most people, no matter their age or shape, wear denim. It’s a pant that may be dressed up or down. With so many styles available, I recommend a straight or flare leg.
You can never go wrong with a classic white blouse paired with denim for a look that will take you from casual day to evening. Next, try a beautiful sweater that adds an effortless elegance when paired with denim. This Jenny Kayne sweater is currently on sale too. Finally, add a white or ecru boot to add style to your look. If this heel is too high, try a boot like this one here or here.
T-Shirts, Blouses and Cashmere
An elevated white or black t-shirt is an essential staple in every wardrobe. A few of my favorites are the ATM Schoolboy t-shirt, the Frame Midrise V-neck, and the Madewell Whisper T-shirt. Also, make sure you have a pretty blouse and crew or v-neck cashmere sweaters to wear to any event.
Below I styled the Veronica Beard knit tie-blouse with the Mother Hustler Kick Flare. I also added a plaid blazer, a perfect piece to add color and interest to your outfit. Find one you like and wear it often! Stylist note-leave your blazer unbuttoned for a chic and effortless vibe. Lastly, we often forget to wear jewelry, but a necklace can elevate a white t-shirt for a casual, effortless look.
Blazers and Cardigans
Wondering which 3rd-piece you should invest in? Try blazers and cardigans! These are wardobe essentials that will allow you to complete all of your looks in a matter of seconds. As the weather gets warmer I will share additional jackets to this list.
A cool sneaker, nude heel or sandal and Chelsea boots are key in your shoe collection. With these shoe options, you can create a variety of both casual and dressy looks.
Take a cozy stripe sweater, add Frame straight-leg denim, waterproof Aquatalia boots, and you’ve created a chic outfit to wear for any occasion. I’ve added a quilted trench coat and scarf to provide extra warmth and style. Finally, don’t forget a red lip by Charlotte Tilbury. This color is one of the exclusive Lunar New Year colors in the CT collection.
